About Us and our Horse Trekking Company

Kia ora and thanks for taking the time to find out more about your upcoming hosts to the Ocean Beach Horse Riding and Horse Treks of Kawhia.

My name is Bevan Taylor and I'm the manager of this very special horsetrekking company.

Our family have lived in the Kawhia region for many centuries, at least since the arrival of the Tainui waka one of the famous waka (canoes) that brought the Maori tribes to New Zealand.

Apart from a few years when I was traveling and exploring Australia and South East Asia, I have been involved with horses in some way. I also come from generations of horsemen.

In the last three years I have been the principle organiser for over 200 treks for the Kawhia Kids Pony Trekking Club and only in Dec, 2013 we finally made the decision to go commercial to start raising funds to move us towards our vision of setting up an outward bounds center for youth.

Teaching kids horse riding lessons has not only been a very rewarding experience over the years, but has reinforced our belief that safety for our riders is absolutely paramount and I am very pleased to announce that so far out of hundreds of riding adventures, we have not had one injured person yet.

We do believe we that with one of the most stunning ocean beaches in NZ and Kawhia's unique heritage, we have a horsetrek with a major difference to other horse riding adventures.

We would like to extend an invitation to you to come and experience our hospitality, our beautiful eco-wonderland and our regions rich history...Naumai haeremai.

Frequently asked questions about our treks

It's taken 20 years, but I'm finally back in the saddle. My mount, a chestnut Arab called Gaia, is carefully treading along the harbour through soft black sand. Up ahead, my guide Bevan and his sons Tokomaru and Tainui (both on frisky geldings) are making the pace. The scenery is breathtaking, the weather wild; I feel like I'm in a New Zealand art film. Hi Bevan

Thank you so much for today, we had such a neat time. With your knowledge of the area and the entertainment from your three beautiful and so capable children we had a lovely day that we remember forever. Please convey our thanks to the children as well.

Kindest regards
